# How to read a New York DMV facility record

> Facility numbers, the 21 license kinds, expiration dates, and what the DMV file leaves out.

## How to read these records

### The facility and its licenses

The DMV gives each facility one number and one license per activity. The license names here are the DMV's own:
New Car Dealer, Used Car Dealer, Repair Shop, Repair Shop Body, Public Inspection Station, Dismantler, Wholesale Dealer, Boat Dealer, ATV only dealership, Snowmobile Dealer, Transporter, Automobile Broker, Dealer Inspection Station, Fleet Inspection Station, Itinerant Vehicle, Scrap Processor, Scrap Collector, Salvage Pool, Mobile Car Crusher, Yacht Broker, Drive-in Appraiser.

### Current or expired

Licenses expire at the end of a month. A license is shown as current when its expiration is after September 2026.
The DMV keeps licenses expired for less than six years in the file; they are shown as expired.

### An annual file

The DMV publishes this file once a year. A renewal made after September 7, 2026 is not in it: a license shown as expiring
soon may already be renewed.

### What is not here

The owner's name — the DMV file gives it, and this site does not publish it. Complaints, hearings and penalties.
Facility names are cut at 40 characters in the DMV file.
